WANXIANG eyes FORD component arm assets
Wanxiang, China’s largest car-parts maker and one of the country’s most acquisitive companies, is in talks with Ford to buy assets from the US carmaker’s troubled components arm.
Lu Guanqiu, founder and chairman of Wanxiang, said the talks with Ford were part of a plan to expand the company’s global presence.
However, he would not say which assets the company was interested in or whether any deal was imminent.
Mr Lu said Wanxiang has also been in preliminary discussions this year with Delphi, the former General Motors parts-maker that is at present in bankruptcy proceedings, but there had been no material results from the talks.
“We have seen that the quality of their [Ford’s] assets is all right, but because of high labour costs the business is not always profitable,” Mr Lu said in an interview with the Financial Times.
Wanxiang is understood to be interested mainly in acquiring Ford’s advanced design and production technology, and in improving the prospects for distribution of its Chinese-made car parts in the US.
However, any deal for the Chinese company to acquire Ford components business would probably face strong political opposition from American labour unions fearing extensive job losses and the transfer of production to China.
Wanxiang’s interest in such household US corporate names underlines an important shift in the auto parts industry. While analysts say it could take a decade for China’s carmakers to become a force in global markets, the country’s components companies are flexing their muscles, combining low labour costs with an improving reputation for quality.
China’s exports of auto parts rose 75 per cent last year to $15.2bn and were a further 38 per cent higher in the first two quarters of this year. Wanxiang supplies both Ford and GM.
中国万向可能收购福特部件业务资产
中国万向集团正与美国汽车制造商福特汽车(Ford)进行谈判,有意从福特旗下境况不佳的零部件业务购入资产。万向集团是中国最大的汽车零部件制造商,也是该国最具收购意向的公司之一。
万向创始人兼董事长鲁冠球表示,与福特的谈判是扩大该公司全球业务分布范围的一部分。
不过,他不愿透露该公司对福特哪部分资产感兴趣,也没有透露交易是否即将达成。
鲁冠球表示,万向今年还与德尔福(Delphi)进行了初步谈判,但目前尚未有实质结果。德尔福曾是通用汽车(General Motors)的零部件制造商,目前正处于破产保护状态。
鲁冠球在接受本报采访时表示:“我们看到它们(福特)的资产质量不错,但由于劳动力成本较高,这块业务不一定能盈利。”
据悉,万向的兴趣主要在于获得福特先进的设计和生产技术,并希望促进万向的中国制造汽车零部件在美国的销售。
然而,在政治层面,这家中国公司收购福特零部件业务的交易,很可能面临美国工会组织的强烈反对。它们担心万向将大幅裁员,并将生产转移至中国。
万向有意收购一家美国家喻户晓企业的资产,突显出汽车零部件行业发生了重要转变。尽管分析师表示,中国汽车制造商要想成为全球市场一支重要力量,可能还需10年时间,但该国的零部件企业凭借低廉的劳动力成本和不断提高的质量声誉,已经在国际舞台展示着自己的力量。
中国去年的汽车零部件出口额上升75%,达到152亿美元,今年前两个季度又进一步增长了38%。万向是福特和通用汽车的供应商。
